    Dear Dr. Waizel,

I read about your Smell and Taste Clinic and if you have a chance, I would love to know your opinion on my case.

    Here is more information:

I was in an accident on Oct 18, 2016 and the back of my head hit the pavement. I was taken to the ER where they did a CT scan. I had a bad concussion (lost consciousness right after impact) but the CT didn't show any bleeding. I was vomiting the first few days, and realized the morning after the accident that I couldn't smell anything or taste any flavor (my tongue taste buds seem to be working, but I can just identify sweet/salty/sour/bitter.) The headaches and body pain got better, and my speech (which had slowed) improved quickly too. In about 2 weeks I was walking and talking like normal again - but still couldn't smell anything.

I don't know whether I hadn't realized it before or if it appeared a week after the accident, but I started getting a smoky sensation that made it feel hard to breathe (and it seemed to come out of nowhere.) That was the only smell sensation I was getting - I started to identify it as a smoky gasoline-soapy sensation. I eventually realized it was only coming from my left nostril.

I read about smell training and started to try it - I got that similar one note from each essential oil. So perhaps it was never a hallucination. Now it seems even more obviously triggered by smelling actual items - even if they all seem to produce this same gasoline-soap scent with slight variations. I think I have noticed more distinction between different scents - however, they still don't smell of their real selves but different versions of this same soapy false smell. It seems to have become less smoky and more saccharine overall.

It has now been almost 3 months since the accident - I'm still hopeful my sense of smell can come back on its own, but very scared of the low statistics. If there's anything you can recommend for me to do, that would be so deeply appreciated.

    Thank you so much,
    Lilian
